January 2020: Intent
Hello there,
I guess since this is the first email for my “newsletter” a hello is in order. So, hello there, my name is Aaron Aiken.
Also, a thank you. Thanks for being interested in what I have to say about things. As this kicks off my intent is to simply reflect on the month that has passed, write down a few observations, and hit send. Topics will most likely vary from month to month. That said, themes that will be common are that of reflection, introspection, and personal improvement. I am writing for myself as much as I am writing for you. We can always do better and be better, and that is what I write for, that is my intent.
Ok, with that out of the way. Hi!
It is hard to believe that January of 2020 is already complete. But, I shouldn’t be surprised. With each passing year time seems to go faster and faster. 2020 will seem to go by quicker than 2019, and 2021 will probably seem even quicker. That’s just the way things are right now. I do wonder if life will ever slow down? I also wonder if more life is needed before I can realize or experience that?
But, for now, life moving fast is my reality and is probably yours, too. I think this is why setting goals at the beginning of each year is a thing that some of us do (myself included). Setting out with an idea of a path before life gets in the way is important to us. I realize there are some who scoff at the idea of setting goals or resolutions for the new year, but I am one who believes there is value in taking a moment to quiet yourself, to think about the future, and to determine exactly what you hope to do or be one year from now.
Equally important is the concept of being intent.
having the mind, attention, or will concentrated on something or some end or purpose.
Goals are one thing: “I want to do this.”
Being intent is another: “I am focused on doing this.”
When we are intent we are focused.
I set a few goals for 2020, and in January I started crossing things off. This is the first year that I can remember making so much progress on various goals so early. I attribute this to my usual level of determination and will, but also to a new level of being intent on just a few things.
Alongside of the idea of being intent, is the concept of being content.
I do not believe we can be intent about one thing if we are not content about other things.
We all have limited time and attention and can really only focus on one thing at a time (if we are being honest with ourselves). If we are not content with what we are currently spending our time (or money) on, then we will find it hard to do it with intent. However, if we are content with what we are doing, then our mind and our will will very easily become intent on what is in front of us.
Be content with what you have determined to do and you will find that you will do what you intend to do.
Have a great weekend and month ahead!
